Promoting Safe, Secure and Responsible Chemical Management Across the Value Chain
The South African chemical sector carries a significant responsibility for the safe, secure, and responsible management of chemicals. To support this, CAIA aligns with key national regulations and international agreements to promote best practices.
These include:
- South Africa’s Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents
- The Globally Harmonised System (GHS) for classification and labelling of chemicals
- International conventions such as the Basel, Rotterdam, Stockholm (BRS), Montreal, and Minamata Conventions
- The Global Framework on Chemicals
Furthermore, CAIA has developed 11 Codes of Management Practice to guide members on matters such as Occupational Health and Safety, Process Safety, Product Stewardship and Chemical Security. Access to these codes is limited to members only.

Chemical Security is About Protecting Chemicals from People
Chemical security focuses on preventing theft, misuse, or sabotage of chemicals by assessing threats and implementing protective measures.
