Declaration of a controlled activity

Summary of Intent

This Notice declares that the exploration and/or production of onshore naturally occurring hydrocarbons that requires stimulation, including but not limited to hydraulic fracturing and/or underground gasification to extract, and any activity incidental thereto that may impact detrimentally on the water resource, is a controlled activity in terms of Section 38(1) and 38(4) of the National Water Act.

Summary of Intent

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development establishes a set of global priorities to help eradicate extreme poverty and shift all countries toward inclusive, sustainable development. In support of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the recent adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Steering Committee adopted a declaration called “The Open Government for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The declaration outlines the importance of OGP’s core values of transparency, accountability and citizen participation; as a foundation for the success of the 2030 Agenda. The declaration is further linked to Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals that aims to “promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”.
