Climate Change Act

Carbon budget and mitigation plans regulations

Summary of Intent
The DFFE is currently drafting regulations in terms of the Climate Change Act that will give effect to mandatory carbon budgets and mitigation plans. At a bilateral meeting held with business, the DFFE indicated that the draft regulations will be published for public comment during September 2024. They stated that the regulations are based on the carbon budget methodology document that was published in May 2021. Climate Change Act

The state of climate action in South Africa

Summary of Intent
A report has been published by the PCC that provides a snapshot of South Africa’s progress towards emission reduction, enhancing climate resilience and improving the lives and livelihoods of all South Africans. The key finding from the work is that although South Africa has strong commitments and public support for tackling climate change and facilitating a just transition, progress is not happening at the pace and scale required to tackle a crisis of such proportion. Key barriers hindering progress include incoherent policies, weak governance structures, insufficient finance, and inconsistent actions by the government and other stakeholders.
