Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS)

Development dialogue

Summary of Intent
According to a report by TIPS and COSATU, in 2022 preferential access under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) helped South African exporters avoid US$116 million in tariffs. Despite some positive impact, the trade measure has often failed to live up to a core objective of driving the development in a diverse range of value-added exports from sub-saharan Africa, and supporting the creation of quality jobs in the region. These underlying challenges have been aggravated by continued uncertainty on the renewal of AGOA.  TIPS will be holding a hybrid dialogue on South Africa in the AGOA on 26 June 2024 from 9h30 to 11h00. Members can register for the event at Meeting Registration - Zoom.Your membership level does not allow you access to this content.
