CLIMATE CHANGE
Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)
Carbon budgets
Summary of Intent
The DFFE is in the process of developing sector methodologies that will be applied in the second phase of mandatory carbon budgets. To allocate carbon budgets to companies, the DFFE has developed a tiered methodological approach relying on one of three methods: (1) benchmarking, (2) mitigation potential analysis and (3) fixed targets. Within this framework, product-based benchmarking is the preferred approach while fixed target setting the least favoured approach for allocation.

European Union (EU)
Corporate sustainability due diligence directive
Summary of Intent
On 24 May 2024, the Council of the EU adopted the directive. The directive will introduce a duty on certain companies to undertake human rights and environmental due diligence. The core elements of this duty are identifying and addressing potential and actual adverse human rights and environmental impacts in the company’s own operations, their subsidiaries and, where related to their value chain(s), those of their business partners. In addition, the directive sets out an obligation for large companies to adopt and put into effect, through best efforts, a transition plan for climate change mitigation aligned with the 2050 climate neutrality objective of the Paris Agreement as well as intermediate targets under the European Climate Law. This will be phased in between 3 and 5 years after entry into force.Your membership level does not allow you access to this content.
