CAIA provided comment during 2013 on the draft Norms and Standards for Environmental Health Practitioners. The current Notice is final and intends to strengthen the provision of environmental health services in the country and is therefore considered by the Department to be essential to strengthen the delivery of environmental Health Services as a critical programme of preventive and developmental Primary Health Care services and to make a significant contribution to the attainment of several Millennium Development Goals.

The List of Occupations in High Demand will now be published every two years instead of annually. The list for 2015 includes the following occupations directly relevant to the chemical industry:

  • Chemical Plant Controller

The primary purpose of the list is to support the planning processes of the Department with respect to the post-school education and training system; particularly in relation to enrolment planning, resource allocations, career advice and qualifications development. Special note: Impact of the Biocidal Products Regulation EU No 528/2012 of 22 May 2012 on the import of manufactured goods into the European Union (EU).

This Regulation has been applicable from 1 September 2013 that regulates the making available on the market and the use of biocidal products. The Regulation also contains provisions that apply to manufactured goods if they have been treated with, or incorporate, a biocidal product. From 1 March 2017 non-compliant articles will no longer be allowed on the EU market.
