Responsible Care® Management System (RCMS) Lead Auditor Training Course

Responsible Care® is the global chemical industry’s voluntary initiative to drive continual improvement in safe chemicals management and achieve excellence in safety, health, environmental and security performance. CAIA is the custodian of Responsible Care® in South Africa and oversees the implementation and maintenance of the initiative. Part of CAIA’s responsibilities include verifying the implementation of the initiative using CAIA-certified auditors. These auditors are trained to be capable to audit as well as motivated to bring value and credibility to signatories’ Responsible Care® programmes while assessing conformity to requirements of the RCMS.

The objectives of the RCMS Auditor Certification Programme developed by CAIA include:

• To ensure that RCMS auditors are of a high quality and can conduct audits effectively.
• To ensure uniform interpretation of the Audit Guidance Document (AGD) and associated Codes of Management Practice (CMP) by all RCMS auditors, independent of their background.
• To provide an understanding and insight into the activities, organisational structures and infrastructures of companies implementing Responsible Care®.
• To create a common standard of auditing amongst RCMS auditors, relating to the safety, health, environment, security, quality, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) aspects of signatories to the initiative.
• To ensure that auditors meet or exceed the audit competencies defined by CAIA and related international standards.

The benefits attached to CAIA’s RCMS Auditor Certification Programme are as follows:

• It ensures that audit professionals have the necessary skills and attributes to conduct RCMS audits.
• Assists organisations in the selection of competent auditors.

Pre-requisites

• Applicants shall have attained an educational standard that permits the necessary knowledge to perform effectively as an RCMS auditor. This includes:
  • Option One: - With a tertiary education.
    • Matric or equivalent secondary education (NQF Level 4) and tertiary education (degree or higher), with four (4) years’ work experience plus at least two (2) years relevant management system working experience.
  • Option Two: - In the absence of tertiary education.
    • Matric or equivalent secondary education (NQF Level 4) with ten (10) years’ work experience in a relevant field plus at least two (2) years relevant management system working experience.
• Relevant work experience shall be considered verifiable experience gained during the last fifteen (15) years and shall be defined as experience that develops skills and understanding in at least two of the areas described below:
  • Implementation of Responsible Care®/ Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ) programmes.
  • Environmental, health, safety or security science and technology.
  • Work experience gained by actual hands-on role in the chemical processing industry and/or environmental, health, safety, or security services.
  • Product safety/stewardship, transportation, or distribution of chemical products.
  • Requirements of environmental, health, safety, and security legislation.
  • Environmental, health, safety or security/RCMS or related auditing procedures, processes, and auditing techniques.
• Work experience qualifications shall not be satisfied by experience solely in auditing services. Clear evidence of work experience, such as in the chemical and allied sectors, or environmental, health or safety fields that provides an understanding of these issues, shall be required. Evidence of work experience must be verifiable and should include:
  • Employer (including contact details).
  • Dates of employment.
  • Roles, responsibilities (job description), and achievements.
• In addition, applicants shall have successfully attended an ISO Management System Lead Auditor Training Course with a training provider registered with a state regulator such as Southern African Auditor and Training Certification Authority (SAATCA).
• NB: Applicants for the RCMS Auditor – Process Safety Code certification shall have successfully completed the Responsible Care® Process Safety Auditor Training Course (RBPSM) offered by CAIA on the second day of the RCMS Auditor Training Course. Furthermore, applicants should have a bachelor’s degree or higher in one or more of the following fields:
  • Chemical engineering.
  • Mechanical engineering.
  • Industrial chemistry.

Assessment

Delegates will be required to participate in an online assessment at the end of each day and obtain a grade of 80% or above, to be deemed successful.
