“Prioritising Environmental Health for Healthier Communities in Global Recovery”
In 2011, the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) declared to observe World Environmental Health Day on 26 September. Environmental Health Day addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health. It is targeted towards preventing disease and creating health-supportive environments.
We are going through difficult times. Because of COVID-19, we are going through one of the worst recession in decades, with losses in business, and consequently in jobs and income, which will bring irreparable damage to the achievement of the desired 17 SDGs.
This global problem, with alarming levels of deaths and infections worldwide, is directly linked to the lack of prevention and the failure to meet the objectives that were set for Sustainable Development.
Universal vaccine distribution can save lives and reduce mortality. Vaccine manufacturers are encouraged to work with emerging countries and provide vaccines on a timely and affordable scale and at the same time Governments around the world should make the vaccine available free of cost to those who cannot pay, or distribute at affordable rates.
Meanwhile, the Environmental Health workforce, should help Governments to act together on developing policies specific to COVID-19 vaccines. From preparing resources for storage, distribution, and delivery, with the best safety and hygiene conditions.
It is necessary that the world understands there is an integral connection between the environment, health, and the economy. It is therefore important to invest in healthy and green recovery, close to all communities, with the support of the Environmental Health workforce and with collaboration from the IFEH. Therefore, the theme for Environmental Health World Day 2021 is “Prioritising Environmental Health for Healthier Communities in Global Recovery”.
CAIA encourages all member organisations and regional groups, academic associates, and Government to set up initiatives and events to celebrate World Environmental Health Day.
