The Chemical and Allied Industries’ Association (CAIA) has launched an updated Process Safety Management (PSM) course, Risk-based Process Safety Management (RBPSM), as part of its Responsible Care® initiative. Internationally accepted as an industry requirement by the chemical industry, the Association is now offering this to the South African industry.
The next course takes place in Johannesburg on 25-26 April 2016.
The course is geared to improving sustainable safety performance in industries that manufacture, consume or handle chemicals, by focusing on new ways to design, correct or improve process safety management practices. It also has industry-wide benefits, as it encourages a better perception of the chemical industry by non-industry members.
Integrated with SHE management systems, the RBPSM course ensures that delegates begin at the design phase, include construction, pre-startup reviews, key aspects of production and maintenance and consider human factors. It is a management system focused on the prevention of, preparedness for, mitigation of and response to the release of chemicals and energy from a process.
The course takes a risk-based approach to reducing or eliminating harm, including damage to plant, material, the environment and people. The course is vital for those involved in designing, implementing and maintaining a successful process safety management system including:
- Process safety personnel
- Operators, supervisors and plant managers
- Engineers, SHEQ personnel and representatives
This recently revised two-day training course focuses on what risk-based process safety management is and how to implement such a system within chemical manufacturing facilities. The training is aligned with the Responsible Care® Process Safety Management Practice Standard and is a mandatory component of the Responsible Care® Third Party verification audit. Signatories are expected to implement appropriate process safety management within their facilities in such a way that process hazards are identified, understood and controlled, so that process-related injuries and incidents are prevented.
CAIA launched the Responsible Care® programme in South Africa in 1994. This is the global chemical industry’s unique initiative to improve health, safety and environmental performance and to communicate with stakeholders about products and processes.
In addition to this programme, CAIA provides linkages to sustainability in the chemical industries’ value chain through advocacy, training, support of educational drives in maths and science and the advancement of these concepts into sub-Saharan Africa.
CAIA is a member of the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), the worldwide voice of the chemical industry, representing chemical manufacturers and producers all over the world and is recognised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). These international alliances allow the Association to source best practice in training, information, advocacy and legislative compliance.
The two-day course costs R2 300.00 (excluding VAT) and is held in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. To book, email rcare@caia.co.za or call +27 (0) 11 482 1671.
