International Day for Biological Diversity – 22 May 2020

In the year 2000, the United Nations proclaimed 22 May as the International Day for Biological Diversity to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. The theme for the day shows that Biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges that we all face. From nature-based solutions to climate, to food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity remains the basis for a sustainable future. The objectives of halting biodiversity loss and promoting the sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems are included in Sustainable Development Goal 15.

The 2020 theme of the International Day for Biological Diversity is "Our solutions are in nature". The theme emphasises hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future of life in harmony with nature.

The theme will cover three essential topics during the week leading up to the observance: 18 May will cover the importance of knowledge and science; 19-21 May will raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity; and finally, the day of the observance, will issue a call to action.

Given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the International Day for Biological Diversity 2020 will be commemorated through its first ever online-only campaign.

Globally, around 25% of all animal and plant species are threatened with extinction. This year the International Day for Biological Diversity is targeted towards raising awareness and building momentum on the importance of biodiversity as well as global issues on biodiversity loss, in the lead up to the United Nations Biodiversity Conference.
