Earth Day – 22 April 2025

Earth Day

On 22 April 1970, 20 million Americans came out onto the streets to march for change. That collective action birthed the environmental movement, resulting in legislation and a growing awareness that there are no healthy people on an unhealthy planet.

Earth Day mobilises over one billion people annually to champion the health of the planet and its people.

Tuesday, 22 April 2025 is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day. 2025 Earth Day’s theme is: Our Power, Our Planet.

Triple Renewable Energy by 2030.

The planet is rapidly approaching several tipping points, and the solution is clear: we must expedite an equitable transition to renewable energy. By tripling global renewable energy generation by 2030, we can transform the future, ensuring cleaner air, improved health, and a more stable climate for generations to come.

Renewable energy offers an opportunity to power the world sustainably while creating new jobs, driving economic prosperity and enhancing global security as well as improving human health and energy equity.

Global leaders should commit to:

  • Tripling renewable energy generation by 2030: Advancing clean energy sources like solar, wind, geothermal, tidal and hydropower. This target supports global climate goals set out in the Paris Agreement, opened for signatures on Earth Day 2016.
  • Cutting greenhouse gas emissions: Rapidly transitioning to renewable energy is the key to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, fighting climate change and lowering energy prices for everyone.
  • Phasing out fossil fuels: The renewable energy sector has taken off globally, but the world is still producing more CO2 than ever before because of the over reliance on fossil fuels. This needs to end with meaningful policies supporting the growth of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
  • Investing in clean energy infrastructure: In 2022 the fossil fuel industry was subsidized globally to the tune of $7 trillion. We must realign these subsidies to support the growth of desperately needed renewable energy, including infrastructure to accelerate the transition. We need smart grids, new high voltage transmission lines, local distribution networks and long-term battery storage. This will drive economic, environmental, and energy security benefits.

The above will pave the way to:

  • Providing affordable, sustainable power for everyone. Bringing electricity to homes, schools and hospitals worldwide, and ensuring energy access and equity for all.
  • Creating millions of new jobs in the energy industry, driving economic growth globally.

The transition to renewable energy is about creating a future where everyone can thrive. Let’s use the power of the Earth Day network and the global movement to demand action from governments, businesses, and communities around the world.

Create a teach-in, make a pledge on social media, register a local clean up event or ask your elected representative to embrace renewable energy in support of this year’s Earth Day theme: Our Power, Our Planet.

Earth Day is time to unite, act, and amplify the voices calling for real change. By joining this conversation, you're not just watching - you’re becoming part of a global movement pushing for a healthier, more sustainable future.
