SUMMARY:TRAINING COURSE - Basic Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals
DESCRIPTION:On 29 March 2021\, the Minister of the Department of Employment and Labour published the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents (HCA) 2021 in Government Gazette (GG No.44348) under Government Notice No. R. 280 with an 18-month transition period. One of the primary objectives of the Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents is to incorporate the GHS and formally adopt it in South Africa. Importers\, distributors\, and manufacturers of hazardous chemicals are expected to implement the GHS. Furthermore\, on 5 April 2024\, the Minister gazetted Draft Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents Regulations Gazette 11687 no 50431 for public comment to be provided by 5 July 2024. \nThe key GHS elements in the Draft Regulations for Hazardous Chemical Agents include: \n\nSection 3. Classification of Hazardous Chemical Agents.\nSection 4. Safety Data Sheet.\nSection 5. Labelling of Hazardous Chemical Agents.\n\nOnce finalised\, the new Regulations will repeal the previous HCA Regulations from March 29\, 2021\, and its amendment from April 29\, 2022\, as well as the Occupational Exposure for Silica Regulations from February 5\, 2010. This will occur 18 months after the date of enforcement. Developed at the United Nations to be adopted as a worldwide programme\, the GHS aims to develop a single\, globally harmonised system to address the classification of chemicals and hazard communication\, using labels as well as Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). This training provides an understanding of the importance and practical application of SDSs and labels on hazardous substances\, using a combination of hazard statements\, hazard symbols and hazard signal words. \n253922 CAIA GHS training note-updated

SUMMARY:TRAINING COURSE - SQAS-AFRICA Lead Auditor Training Course
DESCRIPTION:This course is designed to equip prospective SQAS-AFRICA auditors with the necessary skills and expertise to assess Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) in accordance with the SQAS-AFRICA Management System requirements. This system provides a standardised framework for evaluating the safety\, health\, environmental\, security\, and quality performance of LSPs through independent audits conducted by CAIA-certified auditors. \nOriginally developed by the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic)\, the SQAS framework has been adapted for the African context\, with CAIA serving as its custodian since 1 July 2017. \nThe handling\, storage\, and transportation of both hazardous and non-hazardous goods present inherent risks that may impact people\, animals\, property\, and the environment. To mitigate these risks\, LSPs must implement robust management systems that identify and control potential hazards effectively. Auditing these systems not only ensures compliance but also fosters continuous improvement across the logistics sector. \n Learning Outcomes:\n\nCarry out SQAS-AFRICA audits consistently.\nUphold high quality audit standards.\nPrepare audit reports that will provide value to auditees.\nAchieve uniform interpretation of the standardised audit questionnaires and associated guidelines with other SQAS-AFRICA auditors.\n\nWho Should Attend?\nPersons who are interested and qualified to become SQAS-AFRICA auditors. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:WEBINAR | Biodiversity #2
DESCRIPTION:CAIA invites you to the second biodiversity webinar that builds on from the introductory webinar held on 6 May 2025\, where the benefits of a healthy biodiversity that is well managed will be presented. \nThe South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) will be presenting on their work to create tools and information resources used to guide policy and how biodiversity management is one factor for economic development. Mainstreaming biodiversity ensures that addressing development needs and protecting the environment is not an either-or situation\, but rather that development is supported by the sustainable use of natural resources. \nPresentations will also be made by two of CAIA’s members that have successfully mainstreamed biodiversity into their day-to-day operations to demonstrate how this was achieved.
