DESCRIPTION:The National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008 (NEMWA) came into force in South Africa on 1 July 2009. While the main Act became effective on this date\, certain sections\, particularly those relating to contaminated land were enacted on 2 May 2014. \nThe Act reformed the law regulating waste management in order to protect health and the environment by providing reasonable measures for the prevention of pollution and ecological degradation and for securing ecologically sustainable development. It also provides for institutional arrangements\, planning\, national norms and standards for regulating the management of waste by all spheres of government\, licensing and control of waste management activities\, national waste information system\, and compliance and enforcement. \nFocus Areas of the Webinar \nRepresentatives from the Department of Forestry\, Fisheries and the Environment will provide an overview of the Waste Act with a specific focus on: \n\nRoles and responsibilities of national\, provincial\, and local government\nPermitting and licensing requirements\nClassification of hazardous and general waste\nNorms and standards for waste storage\nWaste manifests and roles and responsibilities\nWaste minimisation\nSAWIC registration process\nCompliance and enforcement procedures

SUMMARY:WEBINAR | Biodiversity #2
DESCRIPTION:CAIA invites you to the second biodiversity webinar that builds on from the introductory webinar held on 6 May 2025\, where the benefits of a healthy biodiversity that is well managed will be presented. \nThe South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) will be presenting on their work to create tools and information resources used to guide policy and how biodiversity management is one factor for economic development. Mainstreaming biodiversity ensures that addressing development needs and protecting the environment is not an either-or situation\, but rather that development is supported by the sustainable use of natural resources. \nPresentations will also be made by two of CAIA’s members that have successfully mainstreamed biodiversity into their day-to-day operations to demonstrate how this was achieved.
