Responsible Care

Process Safety Forum

General information

The purpose of the Responsible Care Process Safety Forum is to provide an opportunity for member companies to assist one another by sharing best practice and pooling resources with specific benefit to smaller companies who don’t have the necessary resources for training. The Forum has undertaken to keep CAIA members informed about Process Safety issues and to discuss and share experiences and concerns arising from incidents. All CAIA members are welcome. Every meeting is kicked off with a “Safety Moment” where a major Process Safety related incident is discussed and the learning’s shared with the members. The Forum meets quarterly and meeting invitation is circulated via the ChemNews.

Process Safety Beacon

The CCPS Process Safety Beacon is a publication of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is a resource aimed at delivering process safety messages to plant operators and other manufacturing personnel. The monthly one-page Process Safety Beacon covers the breadth of process safety issues. Each issue presents a real-life accident, and describes the lessons learned and practical means to prevent a similar accident in your plant. The CCPS Process Safety Beacon is read by over half a million process safety and plant personnel in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, consulting, insurance companies, government agencies, and other organizations in the US and worldwide. More information can be obtained from the following website.

The option to register in order to receive it regularly is given on the site.

ABB Train Catalogue

ABB supplies technical training for professional engineers within the process industries. The training covers a wide range of topics from piping and machines to electrical and civil, from safety and environmental, to reliability and project management. The Process Safety training courses offered by ABB can be viewed by downloading their training catalogue.

Process Safety Best practice Guide

The Guide focus on the study performed by the UK Chemical Industries’ Association on Process Safety management and leadership practices. The Best Practice Guide discusses the results supplies six best practice indicators that can be used to assess the effectiveness of an organisation’s PS leadership. A Process Safety Leadership Checklist is included in the Guide.

Chemical Compatibility Tool

Historical reactive chemical incidents demonstrate that chemical facilities could have chemically reactive materials and systems without knowing the hazards they pose. Others are aware of the hazards but have not put into place adequate safeguards. Although controls for individual materials might be in place, the potential for major incidents exist if materials are inadvertently combined. Chemical compatibility tools assist in identifying the risks when reactive materials are handled and in the prevention of reactive interactions as well as obtaining data and appropriate safeguards needed to control these hazards. A good website that allows on-line internet gathering of compatibility information can be viewed at:

A chemical compatibility program that can be download and installed is available from:

Presentation: Safety Pyramid

An interesting presentation indicating how the pyramid in safety developed through warning signs, near misses, injuries, and ultimately a fatality can be obtained from Janine Mileham: rcare@mweb.co.za

Vent/relief case on low pressure storage tanks

The vent/relief case on low pressure storage tanks should be thoroughly understood and documented. Measures should also be put in place to prevent potential failures occurring and to ensure that maintenance of fine element equipment in vent lines and bund house-keeping is appropriately executed. Information about this topic can be obtained from Janine Mileham: rcare@mweb.co.za

Process Safety Conferences/Seminars/Workshops

UK INSTITUTION OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERS (ICHEME) PROCESS SAFETY COURSE

The prestigious UK Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) course on Process Safety is coming to South Africa on 23-26 August 2010. It will be held near Johannesburg. The course has been held successfully in the UK, Australia and Far East. The course is aimed at both PSM professionals and line managers. The development of the course involved BP, Ineos and the HSE. A number of case studies are used and a course participant assessment is carried out for confirmation of competency. Ian Thorpe, who has lead all previous training, will run the South African course. Features of particular interest to South Africa include consideration of Human Factors in PSM and the understanding of international standards in PSM management. More details later. Enquiries to Rod Prior (r.prior@mweb.co.za, cell : 0825540010)

2nd ANNUAL PROCESS SAFETY MANAGEMENT SUMMIT

The Summit will take place on 19 - 22 September 2010 in Dubai, UAE. You can also benefit from our early bird discount of US $400 if you register and pay before Thursday, 22 April 2010. Call +971 4 364 2975 or email enquiry@iqpc.ae for more information.

Extending your asset life-cycle and enhancing safety and reliability by improving Asset Integrity Management systems and strategies

Held in Cairo, Egypt from the 13th to 16th June 2010, the sixth event in IQPC's successful annual series will bring together international key speakers to share best-practice implementations of Asset Integrity Management.
