Encouraging sustainability on World Wetlands Day

As South Africa celebrates World Wetlands day on 2 February 2016, the Chemical and Allied Industries' Association (CAIA) supports the Department of Environmental Affairs in its vital role to manage and support the South African wetlands.

“This year’s theme, ‘Wetlands for our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods’, demonstrates the vital role of wetlands for the future of humanity and specifically their relevance towards achieving the new Sustainable Development Goals,” comments Deidré Penfold, Executive Director of CAIA.

“South Africa has 22 Ramsar recognised wetlands, the most famous of which is its first registered World Heritage Site, iSimangaliso Wetland Park. Livelihoods from fishing, travel, tourism and water provision all depend on wetlands, therefore the association urges all South Africans to support World Wetlands Day,” concludes Penfold.
